SEE2011 Conference

The Joint Graduate School of Energy and Environment (JGSEE) and CHE Center for Energy Technology and Environment (CEE) at King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) and Kyoto University has successfully organized the 4th International Conference on Sustainable Energy and Environment (SEE 2011)- A Paradigm Shift to Low carbon Society during 27-29 February 2012 at Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld, Bangkok. The event was initially scheduled to be held in November 2011. However, due to exceptional floods in Thailand, the conference had to be postponed to 2012. Still the organizers of the event decided to retain its name as SEE 2011. The event is the 6th in a series of biennial conferences that began in 2000 and the 4th in collaboration with Kyoto University. Since its inception, the SEE Conference has focused on advances in science and technology that address energy security, environmental impacts and climate change issues. The SEE 2011 continues to adhere to this theme. However, it has become increasingly apparent that the goal of sustainable energy and environment will not be attained by the application of lower-emission technologies alone, but a paradigm shift in policy and decision making and the engagement of government, industry and community towards the development of a low-carbon society will be needed.

The SEE2011 Conference attracted over 300 participants from academia, research organizations, government agencies and businesses to present their research work, exhibit institution/company profiles, and attend technical sessions in which 130 papers from 17 countries around the world were presented. The Conference featured several keynote lectures by well known policy makers and scientists. In particular, Dr. Kurujit Nakornthap, Deputy Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Energy, presided over the opening ceremony and delivered a keynote address on "Overview of energy situation and policy in Thailand". Prof. Ralph Sims, Professor of Sustainable Energy, Director of Center for Energy research, and former Senior Analyst in Renewable Energy and Climate Change at the International Energy Agency (IEA) gave a keynote lecture on "Clean Energy Technologies - Too Costly? Too Little? Too Late? Or Two Degrees?", and on "Where are we up to with biofuels?" in the post-conference workshop on "Biofuel technologies: from present to future" on 1 March. In addition, a technical tour to visit Muangklang Municipality: Thailand's Best Practice Low Carbon City and Pattaya Floating Market was also organized on 2 March.
