Advanced Fuel Processing Laboratory (AFPL)

The main focus of the Advanced Fuel Processing Laboratory is the research and development of fuel processing technology to serve the needs for the countrys energy security and environmental protection. A broad range of topics related to coal, biomass, biogas upgrading and waste processing from fundamental research to practical approach are parts of our research activities. There are 6 main research themes in the laboratory as presented below:

Theme 1: Biomass gasification and pyrolysis for heat, power and transport fuel production
                 (Contact person: Asst. Prof. Dr. Suneerat Fukuda)
  • Development of effective and low cost tar removal methods
  • Investigating bed agglomeration in biomass fluidized bed gasification and prevention measures
  • Techno-economic assessment of the biomass fluidized bed gasification system for heat and power generation
  • Development of suitable deoxygenation catalysts for bio-oil upgrading process

Theme 2: Effective combustion of lignite and co-firing of coal and biomass
                 (Contact person: Asst. Prof. Dr. Suneerat Fukuda)
  • Oxy-CFB combustion of lignites
  • Fouling reduction in co-firing of coal and biomass

Theme 3: Integrative conversion of lignocellulosic biomass to ethanol and industrial value-added chemicals
                 (Contact person: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Navadol Laosiripojana)
  • A study on biomass pretreatment and fractionation processes
  • Development of process and system for converting lignocellulosic biomass to sugar and ethanol
  • Development of sorbent for the dehydration of fermented ethanol for gasohol-grade ethanol (99.5%) production
  • Development of process for converting hemicellulose to fuel and chemicals
  • A study on the utilization of fractionated lignin and black liquor as high-grade fuel
  • Development of Integrative Biorefinery Platforms and Prototypes for converting of biomass to biofuels and valuable chemicals

Theme 4: Upgrading of biomass by torrefaction and pelletization process
                 (Contact person: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nakorn Worasuwannarak)
  • Investigation of torrefaction/pelletization of biomass from various feedstocks
  • Characterization of torrefied biomass
  • Kinetic analysis of torrefaction reactions
  • Design and engineering for scale-up process

Theme 5: Biogas upgrading and utilization
                 (Contact person: Assoc. Prof. Dr. Navadol Laosiripojana / Asst. Prof. Dr. Suneerat Fukuda)
  • A study on H2S and CO2 removal from biogas for biomethane production
  • Techno-economic assessment of industrial-scale biogas upgrading by high-pressure water absorption process

Theme 6: Production of high-grade carbonaceous materials/fuels from lignite and biomass by degradative solvent extraction
                 (Contact person: Asst. Prof. Dr. Nakorn Worasuwannarak)
  • Investigation of degradative solvent extraction from various biomass feedstocks available in Thailand
  • Characterization of fractions from degradative solvent extraction of biomass
  • Development of degradative solvent extraction process
