Research Fields :

Problematic Natural Organic Matter in Water

Research Topics :
  1. Fractionation of natural organic matter by chromatographic resin columns into several physically and chemically different fractions.
  2. Formation and control of disinfection by-products of natural organic matter fractions.
  3. Development of a rapid analytical technique that targets such problematic fractions to disinfection by-products (i.e. precursors). The developed technique termed "Spectral Fluorescent Signatures" or SFS has the potential to rapidly and efficiently determine the natural organic matter fractions or those problematic ones to disinfection by-product formation. In addition, it is being developed for the determination of hydrophobic from hydrophilic substances.
  4. The SFS technique is being developed for use in optimization of water treatment plant operations by rapidly determining influent compounds and providing proper treatment for removal. Hence the technique can be used for the determination of disinfection by-product precursors as well as development of a surface water quality standard for natural organics that represent problematic natural organics.
