Fuels, Combustion and Emission Control

The goal is to produce R&D results that may lead to improvements and innovation in the design and operation of combustion related processes and equipment for the conversion of conventional and alternative fuels to clean energy. There are three main areas of the focuses: liquid and gas fuels combustion, solid fuels preparation and combustion, and emission characterization and control.

  • Gas combustion study include spray characterization and combustion of biodiesel, the development of non-spray liquid fuel burner based on porous-media augmented combustion technology, image-based active combustion control for gas burners, development of new concept boiler based on cyclic flow reversal combustion technology.

  • Solid fuels study is focused around the pre-processing of coal, waste and biomass for heat and power generation, and the optimization of the
co-firing of coal and biomass or waste and the gasification process, as well as waste incineration.

  • Studies on emission characterization and control include the development of databases for gaseous and particulate emission from the combustion of different fuels, determination of emission factors for greenhouse gas and particulate matter, and optimization of flue gas treatment process.
