Micro hydropower

The aim is to develop reliable and economical micro hydropower technology to harness the abundant hydro energy resources with least environmental and social impact.

There are two main R&D themes: the development of small hydro turbines and the study of socio-environmental impacts. On hydro turbines, the initial focus is on the design and manufacture of axial flow turbines, generators, switching and control systems with an aim to maximize the use of locally available materials.

The socio-environmental impact study focuses on the assessment of Thailand 's technically, economically and environmentally feasible small hydropower sites, assessment of the socio-environment impacts and conflict resolution. The type of micro hydropower systems of interest include run-of-river, energy recovery from dam
over-flow and irrigation dams.
