The Collaborative Research Laboratory in Thailand (CRL) which is the collaboration between the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES), Japan, Kasetsart University and JGSEE-CEEincluding Thammasat University successfully organised “No waste in canals” capacity development training for BMA district officers on 13 June 2018 at the Century Park Hotel in Bangkok. This training was held under the APN project “Adaptation of Solid Waste Management to Frequent Floods in Vulnerable Mid-scale Asian Cities”. It aimed at providing participants with knowledge on actions (flood waste management planning, in particular) to take in order to enhance the resilience of waste management systems to floods at local level.

The morning session focused on sharing research findings on waste in canals and drainage capacity under different waste blockage conditions, including awareness raising tools elaborated under the APN project. The afternoon session focused on the preparation of action plans for department/district offices to reduce waste dumping in canals and sewages. The training gathered over 50 participants from 47 BMA districts, including, the Department of Environment and the Department of Drainage Sewerage.
