Workshop on
"Sustainability of Solid Waste Management in Thailand"
11 October 2010, Bangkok
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Background
Solid waste management has become a major environmental problem for many countries in Asia. Out of 12 billion tonnes of solid wastes produced globally and which includes 11 billion tonnes of industrial wastes and 1.6 billion tonnes of municipal solid wastes (MSW), approximately 4.4 billion tonnes are generated in Asia (out of which 790 million tonnes of MSW). About US$25 billions per year are spent on solid waste management activities in Asia.
The situation of solid waste management in most Asian countries has become a major issue due to a lack of appropriate and adapted techniques and technologies. The situation is worsening particularly in fast developing economies such as Thailand where amount of waste generation is increasing at a fast rate. Basic waste collection services are still lacking particularly in rural and remote locations and a large fraction of the solid waste stream is open dumped or at best landfilled.
To address the above issues, institutes from several countries in Asia are involved in a 21/2 years EU-FP7 funded project on Integrated Sustainable Solid Waste Management (ISSOWAMA). JGSEE represents Thailand while other Asian countries represented in the project include: India, Philippines, Indonesia, Bangladesh, China and Cambodia.
One of the basic objectives of the project is to assess the existing situation of MSW management in selected Asian countries, including Thailand, using appropriate indicators and provide options for improvement based on the concept of sustainable integrated solid waste management.
Objective
The objective of this event is to provide stakeholders from the SWM sector with up-to-date information and knowledge on various aspects related to SWM in Thailand. Barriers and gaps related to solid waste management in Thailand as well as positive aspects will be highlighted and options for improvement debated via a panel discussion which will involve interactions between experts and stakeholders from the SWM sector.
